Hands-On Approach - "Understanding the Value of An Internship"

Internships provide real world experience to those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular career field. In addition, they are relatively short term in nature with the primary focus on getting some on the job training and taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. Interns generally have a supervisor who allocates specific tasks and evaluates the interns overall work. For internships credit, usually a faculty sponsor will work along with the company supervisor in order to ensure the necessary learning is taking place. Interns can be high school or college students or even adults interested in experiencing a new career. Internships are an excellent way to begin building those all valuable connections that develops and maintains a strong professional network for the future.

 Benefits of Internship:

Gain work experience and transferable skills:

Students all have their educational experience in common. What stand out to employers are those students who also have work experiences by the time they graduate. This automatically makes them more marketable; as they may require less training and are assumed to be able to handle more responsibilities. In addition to the specialized skills of your field, transferable skills are generally required at any job, loke communication, interpersonal and computer skills, and also teamwork.

 Experience a prospective career path:

Exploring is a very important part of the academic process, and gaining a work experience is a great way for students to explain themselves with a field they are looking to learn about. By the time of graduation, the students have confidence that the degrees they are receiving are the right ones for them.

Gain practical experience, by applying methods and theories learned in classes:

Many people learn best by being hands on. But everyone can benefit from seeing the things that they have been learning in class, and to action; whether it’s in a chemistry research lab, a marketing development meeting, or any other subject or technique, interns just need the chance to build a change.

Develop new skills and refine others:

Interns can earn strengths and weaknesses by creating learning objectives and receiving feedback from a supervisor. This is a unique learning opportunity that they may never have again as a working adult. Embrace the mistakes that they will make and the many things that they won’t know. Asking questions, observing, and take risks, is one of the keys.

 Gain confidence in your abilities:

Practice makes perfect. If you’ve learned about a specific technique in the classroom, you’re able to test it out in the world of work. Then, you’ll be much more equipped with the technique.

As an employer, there are 5 main Key points to run Successful Internship Program:

  1. Mentor the interns and make it as priority in the company.
  2. Offer Hands on Work within the Field and engage them to the company’s projects.
  3. Be Clear About Hours, Pay, and Future Employment.
  4. Keep them busy in order to make them learn the process of the work.
  5. Provide frequent feedback.

And now you’ll be known as a business that hires interns, which will help in spreading the company’s reputation within the community and the reputation will be favorable – that the business gives back to interns in a positive way.
